Part of human nature is the desire to push each new frontier – land, space and science.

Humans have always been fascinated by the idea that it is possible to create an intelligent machine. They have looked to the future optimistically with the hope that their society as a whole will improve with each new scientific discovery. But for every optimistic story, there is a commentary on all of the potential problems. And these fears of the unknown and of human scientific capability are reflected in the messages portrayed by the media. Science fiction literature has long been an avenue for predictions of future societies – some ridiculous, but some surprisingly prophetic. These themes can be seen across many different platforms, but they all examine the current cultural trends and they represent the human fear that each new scientific discovery will blur the definition of what it means to be human.

On this website I will look at how artificial intelligence has developed over time, and how the stories humans tell reflect their concern about the blending worlds of humans and machines.

This clip from a PBS show discusses the different areas of artificial intelligence research and the consequences of advanced innovation.
